Level-Up Apocalypse: Surviving With The Assimilation System

Chapter 245: The Final Day

Chapter 245: The Final Day

He watched the creature collapse into a mangled mess of fur and flesh, quietly breathing out before he continued along.

["All I have to do is survive. That’s what I’ve been doing–it’s all I know now."]

Between flickering into warm memories and being thrown back into the reality he faced, he simply marched along, taking small rests, and continuing to move. It was difficult to keep track of any time as he simply survived, hardly "living"--only pushing along in order not to die.

Using his blades to cut through anything that stood his way, he was a machine; unable to part with any thoughts towards just what he sliced through.

On and on this went until–

["One day remaining."]

He found himself greeted by that message while lying on his back as rain pattered against his face. In the flatlands of mud, he laid there without a thought, feeling exhaustion coursing through his body, yet he didn’t focus on it.

It felt as if his entire body had become calloused, remembering nothing but fighting for survival for the indecipherable amount of time spent wandering aimlessly.

"Status."

The region was a graveyard of otherworldly creatures, their corpses laid in the rainfall; chromatic krakens, colossus born of steel, devils that fed on dreams–he had slain them all. He didn’t spare the bodies of the fiends a glance, simply picking himself up as a silent breath fell from his lips.

["All I can assume is that I am the last person left. The final human among the once billions. What I find myself questioning is how come I ended up being the only one left? I’m not special. I wasn’t even an average person–below that, I’d say.

But, when I think like that...For some reason, a small part of me scolds myself. It’s not my own consciousness, no–it’s just...I know they wouldn’t let me think of myself like that. Always seeing the best in me, somehow."]

He found himself never letting go of his daggers recently, squeezing the handles so tightly, so naturally that they might as well be a part of his body.

"Finn, are you alright? Be honest with me."

The soft voice of the azure-haired girl fell upon his ears. He stood there, knowing her presence was impossible, though not rejecting it, "I’m fine. Just...a bit tired, is all."

Turning to face her, he was greeted by that caring smile, reaching his hand towards the one she held out for him—

Tap. Tap. Tap.

—There was nothing there but the rain. He knew that, yet that small solace was still missed. Though exhaustion plagued his body, he marched along the rainfall without any aim but to survive the day–

Rumble.

Everything shook once again, finding himself surrounded by the arrival of countless creatures, erupting from the ground, rushing in from beyond the boundaries. He was surrounded quickly, looked down upon by the monsters of countless shapes and sizes.

--Just as the massive corpses were flung at hypersonic speeds his way, he passed by, attempting to split its throat open, though his blade met no such fate. He caught himself on the levitated corpse of an elephant-like monster being manipulated by the telekinetic fiend, glancing back.

[Enemy identified.]

["Esper God"] [Level: 120]

A spherical bubble shrouded the pale, bald humanoid as it stared at him with its fractured, higher-seeing eyes. Watching its hands slowly move, he hopped off the corpse just as it was twisted and crushed, exploding into a downpour of blood.

Looking down, he watched a swarm of monsters wait for him on the land before–

The muddy ground was split and fractured, being lifted up in massive chunks each befitting of street blocks.

"--?!"

He landed on one of the rising chunks, witnessing other mountainous pieces of land floating in the air, carrying flightless fiends on them as well. In the air, he saw the one responsible; the Esper God, commanding the land as a mere tool.

In the young man’s exhausted mind, he focused everything on taking out the most dangerous one in his eyes.

[Abyssal agent deactivated.]

Just as the cloak abandoned his body, he exhaled only once before quickly forcing oxygen into his lungs–

["Abyssal Agent: Hermes"]

The black-and-gold cloak quickly replaced the aspect of War as an exhilarating swiftness overtook his body. He took off in a sprint, sprinting on the air as the chunks of floating land were split and crushed along with the fiends on it.

In the sky, the Esper God moved its hands like an orchestral coordinator, using stone and bones as high-speed projectiles.

He stayed on the move, sprinting through the sky right for the telekinetic calamity. Sprinting upwards, defying gravity entirely, he raced towards the high-strung entity–

Just as he got close–

It pushed a single palm down, bringing an immense pressure sweeping downward like an unseen mountain collapsing on the sky. He was swatted down like a fly, brought back down to the mud as he gasped out.

The breath was forced from his lungs, feeling an intense ache course through his body as he gasped out. Despite feeling his internal organs ache, he didn’t have a moment to waste as he kicked his legs up, forcing himself to his feet as he set off.

As he sprinted with the essence of godly speed, the territory around him was lifted and split chaotically, being terraformed wildly from above. The perfect moment needed to be found, bypassing the senses of the esper–

["Astral Ripper"]

The movements of his daggers echoed with cosmic slashes, ripping through the sky. Each of the colossal strikes were intercepted by the esper’s barrier, bouncing right off.

’This thing is as strong as Sirius was—maybe not quite as powerful, but more lethal in its behavior,’ Finn analysed, sprinting across the shifting land rapidly.
