Chapter 112: THIRD POV.
His face twisted in a mask of pure rage as he pulled out his heavy silver revolver, aiming it straight at Persephone’s chest.
Those on the mast, the sails, and the crow’s nest, who had been lucky enough not to get washed away by the sudden wave, quickly followed his actions.
They scrambled, pulling out their muskets and pistols. Within seconds, their guns were blazing, filling the air with loud pops and thick grey smoke as bullets upon bullets flew through the air toward the two sisters.
But to the pirates’ absolute horror, nothing went according to plan.
Each time a lead bullet was about to pierce the smooth skin of one of the sisters, thick, iridescent fish scales would emerge in a timely manner right at the point of impact, completely deflecting the deadly metal.
Rather than a bloody display of torn flesh and screaming women, the bullets were ricocheting everywhere, bouncing off their skin with loud metallic pinging sounds.
The scales were harder than the finest steel armor, protecting them completely from the human weapons.
"Darn it! Stop—!" the captain screamed, his eyes widening in panic as he noticed the trouble, but he was already far too late.
The bullets weren’t just falling harmlessly to the floorboards; they were bouncing off the sisters’ hardened scales and flying back into the rigging at random angles.
Some of the firing pirates cried out in agony as the ricocheting bullets pierced their own chests and legs, killing them instead of their targets.
One by one, their bodies dropped dead from the ropes, landing with heavy thuds on the wet, slippery deck below. They were being destroyed by their own gunfire.
Not giving the leader any more time to react or realize how bad his situation truly was, Artria moved.
She blurred across the deck, reaching the captain on the high balcony in a single, massive bound that defied normal convention..
She landed right in front of him in the blink of an eye, the wind from her jump blowing his long hair back.
The captain’s face grimaced in pure terror as he saw her small, clenched fist aiming directly for his face. He could feel the sheer, crushing power behind the strike before it even connected.
In a desperate bid to save his own life, the man hurriedly crossed his thick arms over his face, creating a shield to block the incoming blow.
CRACK.
The fist connected hard against his leather sleeves. Even though he managed to stop the fist from breaking his nose, the sheer, supernatural force of the hit turned his entire arms completely numb, the bones rattling inside his flesh as he was sent stumbling a few steps backward.
’She’s strong.’ The pirate captain’s eyes squinted with deep caution as he leaped back across the wooden deck to create some distance between them.
A normal person would have gotten their arms fractured from that blow.
His arms were shaking from the sheer force of Artria’s punch, and he knew right away that he wasn’t dealing with a normal human girl.
No regular woman could jump twenty feet into the air and hit with the power of a cannonball.
He needed to get away, pull out a fresh weapon, and figure out a new strategy before she closed the gap again.
But on doing so, his face froze completely when water in the form of a thick, liquid tentacle rose from the wet floorboards and wrapped around his feet in a split second.
The trap was so fast he didn’t even have time to look down or try to cut himself loose with a knife. The water was as solid as iron ropes, binding his ankles tightly and locking him in place.
With a single, simple thought, Persephone used the water tentacle to lift the large man completely off his feet, swinging him through the air like a rag doll before sending him flying over the railing and straight into the churning sea below.
He let out a loud, fading scream before disappearing into the waves with a heavy splash.
More tentacles of water quickly emerged from the ocean, twisting and slithering across every inch of the ship’s deck.
They moved with a mind of their own, rushing up the masts and wrapping around the remaining pirates who were still hiding behind barrels or clinging to the ropes.
One by one, the liquid arms grabbed a tight hold of the rest of the crew, lifting them high into the air and throwing them over the board into the cold water alongside their captain.
Within moments, the loud sounds of gunfire and shouting were replaced by the simple, wet splashing of men flailing around in the ocean, completely defeated without ever landing a single effective blow.
"Alright lads! Now—" Douglas, who finally snuck up on board over the back railing with his two trusted men, hollared at the top of his lungs, ready to lead a brave charge into battle.
He had his small cutlass raised, his chest puffed out, but he stopped dead in his tracks.
He instantly flinched in pure fright when he looked around and saw the ship was completely cleared of all enemies, except for the two powerful sisters standing near the balcony.
The entire pirate crew had been wiped off the deck in less than a minute.
"I didn’t need your help back then, you know..." Artria said, turning her head to stare at Persephone with a heavy, irritated frown.
She crossed her arms over her chest, looking thoroughly annoyed that her fight had been cut short.
She had wanted to test her own strength against the pirate leader to see where she stood amongst these humans and yet her sister had ruined it without even asking for her consent.
"And I wasn’t giving any help. You were just taking far too much time dealing with one simple human," Persephone replied, rolling her eyes at her sister’s complaints.
She didn’t have the patience for Artria’s pride right now. Every second they wasted playing around with common thieves was a second they were losing on their main mission.
"I’d rather use that precious time on finding Jacob," Persephone said, her voice dropping into a softer, much more serious tone before she turned her head to glance at Douglas and his two crewmates, Skinny and Fatty, who were still frozen near the edge of the deck like statues.
Artria gritted her teeth in deep irritation, but she said absolutely nothing in return.
She knew there was no point in arguing with her sister when it came to Jacob. She herself obviously wanted to reunite with him as soon as possible as well.
With nothing to say, she let out a loud harrumph, turned around on her heel, and walked aside, probably heading down below into the lower hatches to explore the inner layout of the ship and see what kind of cargo these pirates had been carrying.
Persephone ignored her sister’s departure and looked straight at Douglas, her dark eyes narrowing. "You... you said you wanted the ship. Here it is. Now get to work."
"Of course, your ladyship!" Douglas snapped out of his stunned trance immediately, shaking his head to clear the shock.
He quickly tucked his weapon back into his belt and got to making himself useful before this terrifying sea woman decided to throw him overboard too.
He could see that she was in no mood for slacking off.
"You heard her, lads! The battle is over! I want you two to get to swabbing that deck till it’s spick and span, you hear me!" he shouted, turning around to face his two minions with a loud, demanding voice to show he was taking charge.
"Aye, aye, Captain!" both Skinny and Fatty hurriedly saluted, their bodies trembling slightly as they looked at the wet wood around them.
They didn’t want to spend another second standing near Persephone, so they quickly turned around and hurried down below into the storage area.
They came up shortly after carrying two long wooden mop and a large wooden bucket filled with fresh water, immediately beginning to swab the deck and wash away the salt and debris left behind by the massive wave.
Meanwhile, Douglas trotted up the wooden steps to the upper deck, grabbed the large wooden steering wheel with both hands, and put his weight into it.
He turned the ship around, catching the wind perfectly in the large canvas sails, and began heading in the exact direction of the mainland.
Coincidentally, the direction he was heading to was that where the great empire of Leones lied.
He didn’t know it yet, but he was steering their new vessel straight toward the very kingdom that Jacob was heading to.
Seeing everything finally in its proper place and the ship moving smoothly through the water, Persephone said nothing more.
She walked over to the edge, simply leaning her arms against the wooden balcony and gazing off into the endless blue of the sea.
The cool wind caught her pink hair, blowing it across her face as she watched the small waves ripple against the hull.
’Wherever you are... I hope you’re okay,’ she said quietly in her own heart, a deep feeling of worry tugging at her chest.
