Chapter 389 - 22: It’s Okay, Because You’re Weak
Chapter 389 - 22: It’s Okay, Because You’re Weak
Reaching out his hand again, a clear, crystalline thunder manifested in his palm. This was not the purely destructive Dragon Thunder, but the Cui Ting of the River of Qinghui.
Westheid had decided before the battle to use the River of Qinghui throughout the entire fight. ’After all, with the Rune of Music as a foundation, the current Duke Qinghui is terrifyingly strong. It’s a great opportunity to heavily promote the image of the Qinghui Territory.’
CLANK CLANK CLANK—
Just then, from the disintegrating Floating Fortress, the surviving Cannibal Bone Demons gathered at their master’s side.
Westheid glanced over and saw that they were all essentially skeletons made of metal constructs. Observing the surging Spiritual Fire within them, the Duke Qinghui couldn’t help but frown.
’Is this... are their souls directly infused into these constructs?’
The Master of Decay said, "I once heeded the temptations of Emperor Qianlu and gambled my entire race. It is my greatest regret. Now that I am free, my children deserve to be born anew."
These battle-hardened, elite Bone Demons had returned in the form of constructs, stripped of all emotion. They silently obeyed their lord’s every command, not even flinching in the face of a humanoid monster like Westheid.
With a synchronized scrape of metal, they all drew javelins shimmering with a cold, cruel light from their backs. They hurled them at Westheid with all their might. A piercing shriek tore through the air as the metal javelins rained down, filling every possible space and leaving a warrior no room to dodge.
The three layers of destructive Runes engraved upon them—Demon-Breaking, Armor-Piercing, and Severe Injury—made these javelins unstoppable, capable of easily piercing even a Giant Dragon’s scales.
Yet Westheid’s only response was to extend a hand and raise a single finger toward the sky-filling rain of javelins.
An invisible barrier caused space to ripple faintly, like a heat haze, almost imperceptible to the naked eye.
Yet as the dense, black rain of javelins reached Westheid, time and space seemed to freeze in that spot. The projectiles, thrown with such vicious speed, suddenly halted as if stripped of all momentum. A black curtain of suspended weapons quickly formed before him.
River of Qinghui—Wall of Immortality
This was one of the ultimate Combat Techniques of the Glowing Radiance path, a secret art usable only by those with the most orthodox Qinghui Bloodline and path who had also reached the Legendary Tier. It was on par with the Radiant Bow he had used earlier.
’The River of Qinghui school isn’t weak by any means, but its cost-effectiveness is abysmal. The Combat Techniques it contains simply consume too much energy.’
’However, Westheid was the last person to fear high costs. To him, the sheer spectacle of the River of Qinghui’s Combat Techniques was far more important.’
With all the Bone Demons’ javelins suspended before his barrier, Westheid casually snapped his fingers.
SNAP—
In that instant, all the suspended javelins shot out in a torrential storm, their velocity even more ferocious than their initial approach. Counter-attacked by their own weapons, the Bone Demon Legion suffered massive casualties. The power of the triple-Rune javelins was not to be underestimated; they punched straight through the adamant bodies of the constructs, sending countless chunks of scrap metal flying through the ranks.
Seeing this, the Master of Decay flew into a rage. ’These were his brothers! The ones who had been imprisoned alongside him for thousands of years!’
"I know you’re upset, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves."
Westheid said with a grin:
"You can’t have many of these ’children’ you’ve converted, can you? Is there any point in wasting them like this? I don’t know if this is how you did things in ancient times, but in any case... how about king against king, general against general?"
The Master of Decay suppressed his rage and replied in a booming, resonant voice:
"...A reasonable suggestion. However, for a mere mortal to even consider challenging me alone... your courage is commendable. You must understand that while the humiliation and persecution Emperor Qianlu inflicted upon us was detestable, the power I gained has allowed me to be utterly transformed!"
"You are a mere mortal! The gulf between us is as wide as heaven and earth!"
The Master of Decay’s tone was arrogant, but not without reason.
Before his Soul Fusion, the Master of Decay could only be called a powerful King of the Cannibal Bone Demons; he would have been no match for Westheid.
But after the Ascension Ceremony, even though he had not ascended with Emperor Qianlu, he had still bathed in the power of Ascension as a Celestial God’s Shadow.
In other words, having gone from Extraordinary to Saint, these Demons were all, without exception, divine beings. And between the divine and the mortal lies an impassable chasm.
Westheid was well aware of this, but he wasn’t worried. ’After all, a difference in Tier doesn’t decide everything.’
’Who says stacking stats can’t overcome a difference in Tier?’
With a great roar, Westheid charged the Master of Decay. Their weapons clashed as he forced the Demon lord away from the main battlefield.
"It doesn’t matter! Because for a Demon, you’re really weak!"
RUMBLE—
The figures of the two powerhouses shot straight into the clouds, disappearing from sight as they moved to prevent the aftershocks of their battle from harming their own troops.
Amithren surveyed the disastrous state of the battlefield and said to Yolanda and Mephit,
"Many of the Royal Court’s troops were severely injured by that Demon’s strumming earlier and won’t recover quickly. However, I can still lead a reserve unit into the fray."
Yolanda nodded. "I need to record my brother’s glorious battle. Let’s advance. While he’s locked in combat with the Demon, we will crush the enemy army."
Mephit, ever decisive, was already leaving as she spoke.
"Ha! In that case, I’ll lead the Knights in a flanking attack. The rest of you can do as you please."
A moment later, as the chaos Westheid had caused began to subside, the Bone Demon Legion and the Royal Court Alliance Army began their second engagement over control of the City in the Lake.
Boosted by a harmonious battle melody, the Stringed Swordsmen led by Amithren and the Qinghui Guard under Yolanda’s command rushed to the front lines. They wove an intricate and flawless battle line, their every movement elegant and precise.
"Perfect timing! Swordsmen, tear through their lines! Take the City in the Lake!"
Heavily armored Elf Military Officers swung their massive Two-Handed Greatswords, swatting down skeletal constructs that towered over them and forcefully punching through an enemy line of shields and Long Spears.
Yet it wasn’t the Royal Court’s legions who charged at the absolute front. In comparison, the Yonglan Knights were far more ferocious and fanatical.
This contingent of Knights rode their Wave-Breaking Ships straight into the enemy’s flank, committing to a charge with no possibility of retreat.
"For our Lord! For the Knight King! Charge! Charge! Charge!"
Mephit weaved through the Undead Legion with her Dragon Sword in hand. Runes flowed across her form-fitting Mechanical Battle Armor, enabling the Knightess to execute movements of extreme flexibility and speed.
Her sky-blue hair trailed behind her like a comet’s tail. Mephit cut through the dense enemy ranks as smoothly as flowing water—precise, elegant, and lethal. It was a dance of death on a razor’s edge.
If the Stringed Swordsmen were elegant and refined dancers, then the Yonglan Knights were pure Berserkers.
"For the King of Knights! For the God of Yonglan!"
"For Duke Qinghui!"
The valiant Royal Court Alliance Army smashed through layer after layer of the supposedly unshakable Bone Demon Army Array, relentlessly pushing forward.
The Royal Court’s army was far from weak. Their true fatal flaw was a lack of top-tier power. The moment an enemy deployed power on the level of Divinity, their lines would completely collapse.
For instance, without Westheid, even if the Master of Decay had not taken the field himself, the allied army would have suffered grievous losses simply from the trampling charge of the Floating Fortress the Demon Form had conjured out of thin air.
But now, any being capable of reversing the tide of battle had been dragged into a bloody maelstrom by Westheid. At last, the valiant mortals could defeat the enemy with their own strength.
And that wasn’t to mention their battlefield support.
BOOM!
BOOM!
Support fire from the Wave-Breaking Ships at the rear now played its part. A large number of heavy constructs opened fire at will, their brilliant explosions sweeping across the mountain of corpses and sea of bones. Meanwhile, autonomous siege constructs provided cover for the alliance army, helping them break the Bone Demon Legion’s solid formations.
Mages were chanting Enhancement Techniques to bolster the Knights on the front lines. In contrast, nearly all the Casters on the Demon side had been annihilated by sniper fire from the Great Bows.
With one side gaining strength as the other weakened, the battle was already becoming lopsided.
Westheid alone had succeeded in dividing the battlefield. The Royal Court Alliance Army was clearly aware of this, and the Yonglan Knights charging at the forefront roared:
"Forward! Keep advancing! Our lord is fighting a lone battle! How can we allow our King to be surrounded?!"
