Chapter 187
Chapter 187
SophieSophie adjusted her pace as she approached the reception hall, not to slow herself, but to ensure that every step carried the same measured control she had been taught since childhood. The doors opened as she reached them, and she entered without hesitation, allowing the room to take her in before she acknowledged it in return.
Crescent Hyr did not possess the refinement of the Imperial capital, but the Li household had imposed order on the space with practiced efficiency. Tables had been cleared and repositioned into something resembling a proper receiving arrangement. Banners hung where bare stone had dominated only hours before. Servants moved along the edges with quiet discipline, correcting small imperfections before they could become visible. It was not elegance, but it was structure, and structure was enough.
Her gaze moved across the room and settled.
Gavin stood near the far wall, speaking quietly with Lucas and Rowan Hale. Kaelus Renn stood just behind them, still, taking up more of the room than his size accounted for. They turned as she entered and acknowledged her at once, rank registering in the angle of every head.
Sophie inclined her own slightly as she continued forward, offering nothing and refusing nothing.
She was the first to arrive.
That realization settled into place as she crossed the center of the hall, and she found that she preferred it this way.
Her appearance had been chosen with care, though she would not describe it that way if asked. The dress balanced Imperial expectation with something more intentional. The cut followed tradition closely enough to avoid offense, but not so rigidly that it erased her presence within it. The color had been selected to draw attention without appearing to demand it, and her hair had been arranged with the same consideration. She had chosen not to wear her veil.
The doors at the far end opened, and the Zhou family entered.
Margaret Zhou stepped through first, followed by Robert Zhou, with Ryan just behind them and the twins moving in quieter formation than Sophie would have expected. Travel lingered on the three elders and the boy in small ways, dust at the hems of their garments, a stiffness in posture that came from hours spent in motion, but none of it diminished their presence.
They stopped when they saw her.
Sophie closed the distance and inclined her head in formal greeting. She would not normally do this, it was improper, but she was without her veil and they might not know her face.
"Lady Zhou. Lord Zhou," she said, her voice carrying warmth without sacrificing precision. "Welcome to Crescent Hyr. I regret that your arrival could not be received with the ceremony it deserves."
Margaret's gaze lingered on her face, not impolite, but searching in a way that suggested she was measuring more than words.
"Princess. My goodness, Your Highness, it is an honor. You greet us yourself," she said, her tone thoughtful, edged with awe. "And without a veil. We servants of the Empire are not worthy."
Sophie allowed a small, controlled smile.
"As the matriarch of the Zhou family and Ethan's mother, I assure you, Lady Zhou, you are more than worthy," she replied. "It is I who am in awe of you, for having raised such an amazing son."
Robert Zhou studied her more directly, then inclined his head.
"The honor is ours, Your Highness."
Ryan's attention moved between them with open curiosity, less practiced in restraint than the others. He was openly staring at the princess, and she realized he had likely rarely seen someone of her complexion. She gave him a warm smile and whispered, "Hello there, Ryan."
The boy looked like he might faint. She wanted them in awe of her.
The twins stood slightly behind the others, quieter than usual, their focus fixed on her with a strange sort of knowing that she could not quite describe. She was unsure why they looked at her like that, though if she sat with it, she could probably guess.
Anmei Lu entered without hesitation, her presence altering the tone of the room.
She had chosen something far more restrained than what she had worn earlier, though the restraint only sharpened the effect. The robe followed a traditional cut, fitted but far more modest than Sophie had come to expect from Lu Anmei. The outer silk was a deep ember red that shifted subtly in the light, edged with fine gold threading that spoke of quality without demanding attention. It drew tight around the bodice to the waist before falling in long, uninterrupted lines to the floor. The sleeves extended fully but flared at the ends, and the high collar framed her posture in a way that reinforced composure and restraint, neither of which Anmei was especially known for.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Her hair had been arranged with equal intention, drawn back and secured with understated pins, allowing the soft lines of her features to remain unobstructed while still presenting the refinement expected in a formal setting.
It was exactly what you would expect from one of the Four Beauties of the Empire, but from someone more like Yu Meishan than Lu Anmei. The effect was so unexpected that Sophie, for a moment, did not know what to say to it.
Anmei crossed the room with an ease that did not ask permission, and yet she approached the Zhou family with humility and deference, her smile open, her tone welcoming in a way that felt effortless and deliberate at once.
"Lady Zhou, Lord Zhou," she said, inclining her head just enough to satisfy expectation. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you. The twins and Marissa have told me so much about you. I feel like I know you already."
Margaret returned the greeting with polite warmth, though her attention flicked briefly toward Sophie before returning.
"And you are?"
"Lu Anmei," she replied smoothly. "My father is the Master of the Emberflower Pavilion."
Recognition followed quickly.
"Oh, you are Zac Lu's daughter," Robert said. "How is the old fox these days?"
Anmei's smile deepened slightly.
"Master Zhou, do you know my father?"
Robert smiled. "Yes, I've had the pleasure of meeting your father a few times, though nothing official, and I must admit my lovely wife hasn't had the experience yet."
Anmei smiled. "Well, I would very much like to arrange a proper introduction when time allows. My father would appreciate the opportunity, and I believe there are matters that would benefit from direct discussion."
The offer was presented with perfect courtesy, which seemed to throw off everyone in the room. Apparently Anmei could turn on the polite charm when she needed to. Her intent was unmistakable.
Sophie watched the exchange without interruption, noting the subtle shift in attention across the room. Gavin's expression had taken on a faint amusement, Lucas's not far behind but carrying a great deal more calculation. Rowan remained still, though the slight adjustment in his posture made it clear he had followed the implication just as closely.
Everyone understood what Anmei was doing.
Everyone, it seemed, found it entertaining.
The doors opened again.
Vivian Li entered, and Sophie was not surprised to see she had changed out of the clothes she had worn earlier to Ethan's room. Sophie glowered. The thought of it irritated her more than she was willing to admit.
The reaction to Vivian's entrance was different from the one Sophie or Anmei had drawn.
Margaret's expression softened in a way it had not for anyone else. Robert's posture shifted, not into deference, but into something closer to approval. Even Ryan straightened, his earlier curiosity replaced by something more focused.
Vivian moved forward with controlled precision, her presence settling into the space without effort.
"Mother-in-law," she said. "Father-in-law. Master and Mistress Zhou, I am so very pleased to see you, and I intend to grovel at your feet for your forgiveness."
Sophie thought, and then caught the possessiveness a beat too late. mother-in-law. They were supposed to be hers.
Margaret reached for Vivian at once, drawing her into a brief embrace that carried more feeling than the setting required, though not more than it could bear.
"My dear child. I heard everything from the twins," she said. "There's nothing to forgive. I'm very excited to see you. It's been far too long. And what is this mother-in-law nonsense? You call me Mother, darling."
"Of course. Mother, you are too kind," Vivian replied.
When she stepped back, the transition was seamless.
"But I must apologize," Vivian continued. "I was not present to receive you and Father properly, and I failed to gather gifts for your arrival. I am ashamed."
Margaret dismissed the concern with a small motion of her hand.
"You are here," she said. "That is sufficient."
The twins and Ryan gathered around Vivian, smiling, and Lady and Master Zhou drew in close. It was the most open Sophie had ever seen Vivian be.
Sophie felt the shift, the ease of the exchange, the familiarity, the acceptance, and watched the family fold Vivian into the center of itself as though there had never been a question of where she belonged.
Before she could work through what that turned over in her, the doors opened once more.
Ethan entered, looking quite dashing, though uncomfortable.
The room changed with his arrival. Lady Zhou moved first, closing the distance without hesitation, her hands reaching for him as though confirming his safety through touch and will alone. Robert followed a half step behind, less intense but no less invested. Ryan came after, his restraint giving way to something far more personal, while the twins held back.
Sophie remained where she was, watching.
The carefully constructed order of the room loosened, shifting into something that no longer belonged entirely to protocol. The Li brothers, Rowan, and Kaelus seemed content to watch, smiles on their faces.
Then Sophie watched something she had not expected. Ethan's whole bearing changed when he was with his family. His siblings leaned toward him. His mother touched his face and whispered to him, and he let her. Ryan and the twins looked at him as though he had hung the moon. The long-standing rumor about Ethan Zhou was that he was cold, capable but awkward and distant even from his own blood, and it was not entirely off from the truth. She had seen moments of that since coming into contact with him. She knew he was brilliant and handsome. This warmth, this loving and unguarded interaction, she had not expected at all.
Something behind her ribs loosened as she watched it.
He did not retreat into formality or attempt to reshape the moment into something smaller. He accepted it, steady in a way that let the emotion exist without losing hold of it.
Sophie's gaze lingered on him, then shifted.
Vivian stood just to the side, composed, observing with an expression that revealed nothing and everything at once.
Anmei's attention was no less intense than before; her earlier amusement had settled into something more watchful.
Gavin, Lucas, Kaelus, and Rowan held their positions, letting the moment unfold without interference.
Sophie stood back, and understood, all at once, what she was truly up against if she wanted to make her place with Ethan stick. She was not used to being sidelined. She had arrived first. She had controlled the open. And without effort, without announcement, the center of the room had moved away from her and toward a family she was not yet part of.
She understood it for what it was. She was the princess, and very minor to this particular story.
A messenger appeared at the edge of the gathering. The reunion turned, one face after another, toward him. He bowed in front of Ethan.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, Master Zhou, but we have another dignitary coming in. One we weren't expecting."
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
Margaret Zhou was looking at her message crystal. "Actually, they've arrived faster than I expected. Not a minute too soon."
Everyone looked at the matriarch of the Zhou family.
"Come, everyone. Let us go and greet my guest."
